In the 1830's Peter Greensky, a Chippewa, preached the gospel and converted his native brothers and sisters in the Leelanau area to Christianity. He served as a guide and interpreter for his fellow missionary, a non-native, Peter Doherty, and he also acquired a following of his own as a strong preacher with great influence among his people.
These people traveled with him to the Charlevoix area where they began the mission. In 1860 he was put in charge of the all-Indian Pine River Mission, now known as Greensky Hill. He served there until his death in 1866.
Our current worship consists of a variety of activities and worship times. In addition to morning and evening Sunday worship services, there is a Bible study. Currently, we have Sunday school for children at the 9:00 AM and 5:00 PM worship. We celebrate fellowship after morning service with coffee and sweets; after our evening service we enjoy a potluck meal together. We also have an active men's group and a women's group. We have a women's drumming & singing group. We are eager to enlarge our congregation and include more activities. For many years the mission has been the scene of an annual camp meeting which drew Indians from several states and Canada. The revival meetings also gave church members a chance to renew personal and cultural ties. Today the church is used by an active, racially mixed congregation of whom some are descendants of the original worshippers.
